Dennis Yemma gave a fascinating talk on Japan's Geography, History, Culture and Economy at the Fort Myers Library Conference Room.  Of course, the stories and pictures of the club's homestay last year were highlights of the afternoon.  Jule and Dennis also treated us to tea that they brought back from Japan and homemade sushi.

We had a wonderful attendance and we hope to obtain a few new members from their efforts.  Thanks, Dennis and Jule, and to everyone for supporting us at this special event.

Lincoln, Nebraska Inbound Exchange  Nov 16-22, 2014

Sue addresses the group at Welcome Lunch at Edison

Twenty Seven members of our club participated by hosting, driving, or making dinner for 17 wonderful hardy Ambassadors from Lincoln, Nebraska.  Did we have fun or what?

The week started with a beautiful Welcome Lunch along the banks of Caloosahatchee River at the Edison Ford Winter Estates.  What gorgeous weather we had and yummy food.  The fun continued the next day as our wonderful, capable ED, Sue Linehan, and her able assistant, Rob Linehan, drove vans to Wooten's near Everglade City.  It was a chilly day, but that did not dampen the fun as the

Everglades Airboat Ride
Riding the Airboat at Wooten's, Everglades

group rode an airboat, a swamp buggy and checked out the alligator show.  Oh, and there was a delicious lunch in the little town of Chokoloskee.

Wednesday included a trip to Ding Darling on Sanibel with some beach combing.  That evening we enjoyed wonderful hosted dinners.  Thank you, Elin Derickson, Cecilia & Ted Bridge, Cassandra Wooden, Ingrid & Wilhelm Wittman and Phyllis Becker & Maynard Houston for cooking such delicious dinners.  Thanks also to Ruth Emmel for creating a beautiful Exchange Booklet with pictures.

Thursday was another gorgeous day.  Sue and Rob prepared a delicious taco salad lunch at their home in Punta Gorda for 40 ambassadors and club members.  They arranged with their boat friends to have 3 catamarans take everyone out for an afternoon sail on Charlotte Harbor.  Many Nebraskans had never sailed before and this event was a highlight for them.  We were sad to say "goodbye" to the group, but we gave them a good sendoff at the Farewell Party on Friday.  We hope to do a reciprocal exchange with Lincoln in 2016. Thanks so much, Sue and Rob, for organizing this fun exchange.

2015 Outbound Exchange to Belgium and Germany
                                  May 12 - 26, 2015

Our outbound ED, Lou Rizk, advises that 12 people put down a deposit on our club's outbound exchange to Schwerin, Germany and Bruges, Belgium.  There are 3 openings remaining; however, there is another couple interested.  If you want to take part in this exchange, don't delay in putting down your deposit. The first exchange is scheduled May 12-18 in Schwerin; the second begins May 20 and ends May 26 in Bruges.  Depending when we leave Germany, we will have part of the 18th, all of the 19th and part of the 20th in Amsterdam, Netherlands.  We will have a meeting of all the outbound ambassadors sometime in March at Lou and Cheryle's home at which time details will be finalized.

Welcome New Members

Carol & Chris Nasby of Punta Gorda recently joined our club.  They jumped right in and hosted 2 Nebraskan ambassadors!  Carol & Chris are snowbirds and spend summers in Minnesota.  Carol is a retired French teacher and of course, speaks French fluently.  Chris is an engineer and is still working.  He promises to retire soon!

We are so happy you joined us and we look forward to seeing you at our next events!

President's comments

I have not heard from Atlanta regarding our request for our club's outbound travel exchange in 2016.  We asked for a reciprocal exchange with Turrialba Costa Rica, the club we hosted this year. I will keep you posted on this opportunity.

                                   **************

I spoke to some of our members and many of you have been traveling to some wonderful destination.  Here's what I know:

  • Cassandra Wooten just got back from an exchange with the Illinois FF club to Chile and Buenos Aires.  She had a wonderful time!
  • Dennis & Jule Yemma, Pam LaFontaine & Al Scimitaria, Reta Lanning & Bob Kissinger recently returned from a wonderful trip to Italy
  • Sue & Rob Linehan participated in a domestic FF trip to Asheville, North Carolina.  Ask them all about beer!
  • Richard and I are recently back from a FF Exchange with the Fort Worth Club to Perth and Albany, Western Australia with an add-on trip to Alice Springs and the Outback.  We hope to show some of our pictures at a future meeting.  Just an awesome time!

Sorry if I left anyone out - if you want to let other club members know where you've been, just email me with your traveling news for the next newsletter. In the meantime, have a Wonderful Thanksgiving and Holiday Season!

Happy Travels,

 Joanne

2015 SW Florida to Belgium Outbound

Lou Rizk was chosen by the Board to be the Exchange Director for the Belgium Outbound which is tentatively scheduled for May or June 2015.   Lou is in discussion with their ED to firm up the dates and begin the planning process.

The Belgium Club stipulates that each ambassador must be able to easily walk at least 3 miles touring the city with their club member guides and have an interest in the history and culture of the area.  The club is a small one and can accommodate 12-14 people.  We already have quite an interest in this exchange and hope to have great participation.

Lincoln, Nebraska Inbound Exchange  Nov 16-22, 2014

Sue and Rob Linehan, the EDs for the Nebraska exchange, recently traveled to Nebraska to celebrate her Dad's 102nd birthday. Since they were in the vicinity, they detoured to Lincoln to talk to them about their upcoming visit in November.  Sue said they were a great bunch and we are sure to enjoy them.  She has lots of fun events planned including a catamaran cruise on Charlotte Harbor. To date, we could use a few more home hosts.

Please open your home up to some wonderful Nebraskans. Email or call Sue and Rob if you can participate soon!

Denver, Colorado Inbound Exchange -  Early 2015

We committed to host a group from Denver, Colorado Friendship Force in  early 2015 (final date to be determined).   This exchange happened as a result of Cecilia Bridge's contact at the National Meeting in New Orleans.  The Coloradans are ready to get out of the snow and soak up SW Florida's great "winter" weather.  In return, they will host our group in 2016 (date to be determined).  Cecilia Bridge volunteered to be the ED and Jonnie Sprimont will help her.  Of course, we'll need home hosts and help with the parties.  Please think about what you can do and let them know.

Brazil in Punta Gorda happened June 20th

What a nice turnout we had for Sarasota's Travel Exchange Talk in Punta Gorda!  Bob Joyce, one of their members, entertained us with fabulous pictures and information about his experience in Brazil with Friendship Force.  Sue Linehan  and I prepared authentic Brazilian desserts for samplings.  Afterwards, we had quite a crowd at Jack's, for their delicious early-bird specials, Check out the pictures below!

      Costa Rican Inbound Exchange

Add a descriptionJohn Jensen, ED, receives Costa Rica Flag at Farewell Party

Thirteen Costa Rican Ambassadors plus 2 Japanese guests (visitors from our Japanese Outbound Exchange last year) were hosted in style by our club from March 30-April 4.  The festivities began in Bonita Springs with a sensational Welcome Party hosted by Luvvy Kovacik.  It continued at Lovers Key Beach, then onto Shark Valley, a tree planting in their honor at Freedom Park, Naples - and even a pizza party hosted at the Yemmas home.  It concluded at Lakes Fairways Community Clubhouse (thanks Judy Carson!) at a memorable Farewell Event.

John Jansen said, "having NICE people like the Costa Ricans makes the biggest difference in having a great exchange."  He's already received a gracious Thank You Letter from Maria who said that she wished they spoke better English, but everything worked out well.  Cheryle and Lou mentioned that the Translation Buddy app on their phones was used constantly - what a great asset to communication!

H U G E thanks goes to John Jansen, our ED, and to the last minute van drivers, Dennis Yemma and Reta Lanning and the hosts for their kindness in opening their homes!  It takes help from everyone and you, the membership of FF SW Florida, came through!
